Hooray for Summer in full swing! Today I'm writing up my list of Summer Essentials - things that are making my summer a little more HEALTHY, DELICIOUS, & FUN!
If you live anywhere near the ocean, do yourself a favor and buy some fins; your beach days just got WAY better! They give me so much confidence and courage to swim in bigger waves and further out than just dunk-in-to-pee range. (We all know that's what you're doing when you wade in hip-deep).
You'll feel like a mermaid. Or mer-man. Try these DaFins from Hawaii. (And always remember to check with the lifeguards before you enter the ocean!)
Because you need to make these boozy Pina Colada Popsicles for your next party:
- 1 can full-fat coconut milk
- 1 1/2 cup frozen pineapple
- 3 Tablespoons coconut nectar or simple syrup
- 1/4 cup rum
Pour into tiki popsicle molds, freeze at least 6 hours, and enjoy while singing the PIna Colada Song.
The way I see it, I spend the entire summer in either workout clothes or a bikini... so spending a little more on something beautiful and well-made is so worth it. Stone Fox makes tropically-inspired bikinis and fitness gear that will make you feel incredibly gorgeous while you sweat & swim.
Note: get ready to bronze those cheeks, ladies; the bikinis are itsy-bitsy. (PS - Lots of the pics on their website were taken in Fiji right near where we go for Bula Wellness Retreat!)
My other favorite for beach yoga and Stand-up-paddling - pants/shorts/capris from With Love From Paradise - gorgeous tropical prints that work well in/out of water and tops that work as a sports bra OR swim top!
4. Beach reads
Currently reading: The Cactus Eaters by Dan White - a tale of backpacking on the Pacific Crest Trail (with more of a funny tone than Wild ) which is inspiring me to get out there into the wilderness and hike more. And Hotel Honolulu by Paul Theroux - an off-beat, sultry (rated R) read about the characters that come and go in a somewhat seedy hotel in Waikiki.
(What's on your summer beach reading list?!)
5. Coconut Oil
If you're not already using coconut oil for cooking, where have you been?!? It's an incredibly healthy heat-stable cooking oil, full of medium-chain triglycerides that are readily available for your body to use as energy. But it's got a ton of other uses too: hair conditioner, skin moisturizer, sunscreen (around SPF 4!), toothpaste, makeup remover, lip balm, massage oil, pet food supplement... and like a million other health benefits! Be sure to get an organic, unrefined, virgin oil like this one, or check out this Coconut Oil Spray from Chosen Foods!
6. Coola Suncare
Not all sunscreens are created equal. In fact, many contain toxic ingredients that can be harmful to your skin, hormone health, and even toxic to the marine life, containing ingredients that cause bleaching of coral reefs! So I choose to go with a physical barrier (rather than chemical barrier) sunscreen like Coola's MineralSport Citrus Mimosa from our favorite beauty experts at ShopConsciousBeauty.com. (use code January on their site for 15% off your order!) It uses minerals zinc and titanium dioxide to block UVA/UVB rays, and won't harm the oceans, OR your skin.
Also check out their pretty new SPF 30 Lip Lux Lip Shades!
Another favorite San Diego-based small business that makes a super clean sunscreen: Coco Bee Naturals
I'm all about getting your nutrients in whole, real-food form whenever you can. But if I'm on the run or traveling, I love knowing that I have a backup green juice powder to get a boost of nutrients in. Great on it's own or mixed into a smoothie! (I've partnered with Organifi to bring you a deal on this one: use code JANUARY15 for 15% off your order!)
OK - now get out there in the sunshine and ENJOY!
