On February 21st the largest cyclone ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere devastated the Fiji Islands. The eye of the storm passed directly over Savusavu, where we host the Bula Wellness Retreats and where many of our friends are. With winds over 185mph, storm surges well above normal sea level, and 20 foot waves, the damage to many villages is extensive, with many homes and lives lost.
For all of us who have visited Fiji, (and those who have it on your bucket list!) we know that it's the incredible spirit of the Fijian people that makes these islands the most magical in the world. They don't always have much to give, but will give you anything they can with their whole heart.
We're still getting reports of just how drastic the situation is. Some of our friends have had their houses completely demolished by the storm surges and winds, and all personal belongings being lost. Many are still without water or electricity. The main jetty for the island of Vanua Levu was damaged, so as of now, the main ferry can't get in large amounts of supplies. A few of our friends from Namena Island Dive Resort weren't able to evacuate the tiny island in time and were forced to weather the storm that wiped out all structures on the island by hiding in tree wells for the night. And yet as our friends relay these messages to us, they are full of gratitude for what they do still have; life and each other. And I can sense a calm, still-standing peace in their voices.
Together with the Young Family of Koro Sun Resort, we are collecting donations to be given directly to the Fijian staff of Koro Sun, and the nearby villages of Naigigi and Waivunia. Here's your chance to help in real time, and to see directly where your money will go! I'll be in Fiji soon, and will post pictures of the people and places we've helped.
Any amount helps; we are very grateful for you! VINAKA VAKALEVU!
